In 2019, Pope Francis instituted Word of God Sunday to be celebrated on the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time each year. According to his Apostolic Letter “Aperuit Illis”, the day “is to be devoted to the celebration, study, and dissemination of the Word of God.”
After all Masses this weekend, please pick up a copy of “Exodus” as a gift from the parish. The Exodus or the going out from Egypt lies at the very heart of Israel’s faith experience. The God who acted on her behalf was not an insignificant deity of the ancient Near East cut off from reality and relegated to the realm of mythical time. Rather, God dramatically entered the arena of real-time and real people. As the introduction puts it, “I, the Lord, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery” (Exodus 20:2).
