A church’s narthex, or gathering space, has many purposes: a place for conversation, dropping off items for those in need, the sharing of information, and sometimes even fundraising. At St. Mary’s, however, there is a sacred space within our narthex: the Baptistry. It is sacred because “Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to other sacraments” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1213). Unfortunately, too often the line between the narthex and Baptistry is blurred and the latter becomes the repository for all kinds of items. I’ve even seen the baptismal font itself used as a shelf! I have attempted to set off the Baptistry from the narthex so that this area is given the reverence it deserves. The new railings helping to frame the Baptistry are a generous gift to the Parish of Joseph and Nancy Ebler. Some years ago, Joe also refurbished the baptismal font and the Paschal Candle stand. The decorative rope is the kind gift of Joanne and Jack Kolvalchek. A heartfelt thank you to our benefactors and thank you all for respecting this sacred space. - Msgr. Benwell
