In light of our celebration of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus last weekend, some thoughts on the livestreaming of Mass. Many parishes in our area have discontinued livestreaming completely. We still do so here at St. Mary’s (our weekday 8 am Mass and the 4:00 Saturday Vigil Mass) and we'll continue to do so, as an outreach to those who, for various legitimate reasons, cannot attend Mass but still want to feel connected to our parish family. However, to watch Mass at home on Sundays simply for convenience is simply missing the whole point of the Mass, missing out on the most important element of the Mass, missing out on the most intimate encounter with the Lord Jesus possible for us this side of heaven.
"Liturgies in which the faithful participate only virtually risk distancing us from a personal and intimate encounter with the incarnate God, whose presence among his people was not virtual but Real, as he said: "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him" (John 6:56).
